Climate change continues to impact the world with increasingly palpable and devastating consequences. Currently, both Europe and Israel are being battered by an unrelenting heatwave, exacerbating the climate crisis affecting both regions.

This rise in temperatures leads to reduced precipitation and increased drought, affecting the availability and quality of water, a scarce and strategic resource for the region. According to the IPCC, annual precipitation is expected to decrease by 10% to 20% in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East by the end of the century.

This could result in reduced river flow, greater salinization of coastal aquifers, and an increased reliance on alternative sources such as desalination or wastewater reuse.

Moreover, this situation significantly impacts the quality of life for people, especially vulnerable groups like the elderly, who struggle to cope amidst an ongoing energy crisis and mounting inflation.

Europe is experiencing an intense heatwave, with temperatures breaking historical records. This very problem has also struck Israel, a region already vulnerable to climate change due to its arid and semi-arid climate. In this context, the situation worsens due to the current energy crisis and the rising cost of living, posing risks to the health and well-being of millions, especially the elderly, who are more susceptible to the effects of extreme heat.

Many elderly individuals live in impoverished homes without air conditioning systems to combat the suffocating heat. This exposes them to risks such as heat strokes, dehydration, and heat exhaustion, which can have severe and even fatal consequences for their health.

The scarcity of energy resources and the economic crisis have led to steep increases in electricity costs. For elderly individuals living in precarious situations, this becomes an unbearable financial burden. The lack of access to air conditioning systems or the inability to pay for their use poses significant health and well-being risks during the heatwave.

The combination of high temperatures, energy crisis, and inflation affects the quality of life for the elderly in Europe and Israel in various ways. Elderly individuals are more prone to suffer from heat strokes, dehydration, and respiratory problems during extreme heatwaves, and the lack of adequate cooling systems exacerbates these risks.

The response from our Ministry, “City of Life,” has been truly inspiring. With determination and commitment, we successfully carried out the distribution of fans at our social outreach center. It was a day filled with emotions and gratitude as many vulnerable families joyfully received the new fans that will provide much-needed relief in the sweltering heat.

Conscious of the fact that many in-need individuals were unable to leave their homes and come to our center, our team took it upon themselves to deliver aid directly to their doorsteps. We distributed fans at their houses to ensure they would not miss out on this significant distribution. As we witnessed the dire need for these people to have a fan, their faces lit up with gratitude. Knowing that our initiative reached those who needed it most and that we could provide them with a breath of relief amidst the extreme heat was a deeply moving and meaningful experience for our entire team.

Many families in Sderot felt truly blessed to have our Ministry, “City of Life,” during these challenging times as the distribution of fans not only provided tangible relief from the heat but also served as a reminder that they are not alone in this battle. The warmth and affection shared on that day became a tangible representation of our mission to care for and serve those in need.

You can be part of and impact the lives of more people who need help in our city and together show them the way, the truth and the life.

We invite you to be part of our ministry so that together we can bring hope to our border town of Sderot.

Our work would not be possible without the help of partners like you, so we ask you to consider in prayer the possibility of a monthly commitment that will allow us to continue with the Lord’s work here in Israel.

Sincerely yours
