Shavuot, also called the Feast of Weeks or Pentecost, is a celebration of the season’s first harvest and the conclusion of the seven-week Counting of the Omer, which begins at Passover.
This biblical festival honors the first wheat harvest in Israel and the offering of the earliest fruits of the land. In ancient times, people would bring these firstfruits to the Temple in Jerusalem as an expression of thanks to God for His provision.
The Torah
According to Jewish tradition, the Torah was given exactly 50 days after the Exodus from Egypt, on the Feast of Shavuot. The Israelites reached Mount Sinai at the beginning of the month of Sivan, where Moses went up the mountain, and God spoke to the people. The word Shavuot shares a root with “shvuah” (oath), reflecting how the people swore twice to obey God’s commandments. At that moment, God entered into a covenant with Israel.-
Two leavened loaves were offered
Unlike other offerings in the Temple, which were unleavened, Shavuot required two leavened loaves to be waved before God. This was a special thanksgiving for the wheat harvest. In the New Testament, wheat symbolizes humanity and leaven represents sin. The two leavened loaves prophetically represent Jews and Gentiles—two sinful peoples—being offered together before God. Just as many grains form one loaf, both groups are united in Yeshua, who makes them one. The Shabbat tradition of two covered challot reflects this shared redemption in Him.

The first believers were all Jews
On the day of Pentecost, the first 3,000 believers were devout Jews who had come to Jerusalem from across the diaspora. They heard the gospel in their own languages when the apostles, empowered by the Holy Spirit, spoke in tongues. These Jews returned to their countries carrying the message of salvation, fulfilling prophecies that the Word would go out from Jerusalem and the Torah from Zion. The tongues of fire seen that day symbolized the light of God spreading through them. Some archaeologists even believe this event took place on Mount Zion.
Shavuot is far more than a harvest celebration, it is a powerful reminder of God’s covenant, His Word, and the unity He brings through His Spirit. It connects past and present, Jew and Gentile, harvest and hope. May this Shavuot renew our gratitude for His provision and our calling to be light in this world.
Chag Shavuot Sameach!
You can be part of and impact the lives of more people who need help in our city and together show them the way, the truth and the life.
We invite you to be part of our ministry so that together we can bring hope to our border town of Sderot.
Our work would not be possible without the help of partners like you, so we ask you to consider in prayer the possibility of a monthly commitment that will allow us to continue with the Lord’s work here in Israel.

Sincerely yours
