Recent data from Israel’s Ministry for the Elderly sheds light on a disheartening reality – a significant number of elderly individuals in the country find it difficult to enjoy their lives and an astonishing half of the elderly population grapples with the burden of depression, while most also endure financial hardships as these distressing statistics reveal the urgent need for support and attention for the elderly in Israel.

In regions like our city Sderot, close to the Gaza Strip, the situation exacerbates further as a profound sense of vulnerability permeates the daily lives of the elderly, mainly due to the prevailing insecurity and with the constant threat of rocket attacks, the mere 15-second window to seek shelter in bomb shelters upon the sounding of the alarm siren leaves these senior citizens grappling with intense psychological distress. The overwhelming roar of rockets being intercepted by the “Iron Dome” anti-missile system, or worse, crashing into nearby buildings, only serves to intensify their anxieties and instill deep-seated fears that continue to haunt their hearts long after the immediate danger has passed.

Compounding their emotional struggles, the elderly in Sderot face serious economic challenges as many reside in aging apartments offered through the council home program or find themselves in residence homes without adequate support from the authorities and the pervasive feeling of loneliness in their daily lives further exacerbates the issue, giving rise to the development of severe emotional disorders and plunging them into the depths of depression.

Depression among the elderly is an increasingly urgent concern in the landscape of mental health and as the population ages, it is crucial to recognize and address the emotional and psychological challenges faced by our seniors. Depression in this age group may manifest differently than in younger individuals, often leading to it being underestimated or confused with other medical conditions.

Social isolation, lack of support, and a sense of purposelessness can further intensify feelings of sadness and hopelessness and one worrisome factor is that depression in the elderly often goes unnoticed or unreported, leading to delayed diagnosis and inadequate care. This situation is particularly critical for those living in isolated environments or lacking a support network.

A Day of Restoration and Connection for the Elderly Of Sderot

In the midst of the challenges faced by the elderly in Sderot, a ray of hope emerged when our ministry, City of Life, organized a truly unforgettable event – a Recovery Day, dedicated to bringing relaxation and joy to the hearts of these resilient souls, many of them were survivors of the Holocaust, carrying the weight of a painful past, and we were determined to show them the love and care they deserved.

With a bus full of the elderly we have headed towards a picturesque Spa with natural thermal waters, known for its rejuvenating and healing properties. The thermal waters, enriched with minerals, have long been celebrated for their therapeutic benefits, offering not only physical restoration but also soothing solace to weary souls. As the elderly guests soaked in the warm embrace of the hot mineral waters, they experienced a sense of tranquility, their troubles momentarily lifted, and they experienced relieve.

The joy and delight radiating from the elderly participants were immeasurable as smiles adorned their faces, and the sparkle in their eyes conveyed a profound sense of contentment. Amidst laughter and heartfelt conversations, they formed connections with one another, forging bonds that transcended time and adversity and it was a day filled with shared laughter, profound empathy, and an exchange of life stories and cherished anecdotes.

The highlight of the day culminated in a special communal meal, where they sat together in harmony, forgetting for a moment their loneliness and over the delicious spread, they reveled in the warmth of companionship, discovering common threads that wove their lives together and sharing stories of survival and resilience from the Holocaust survivors that served as a testament to how God saved them and reunited them back in their land.

As the event drew to a close, the air was filled with gratitude and appreciation as the elderly participants expressed their heartfelt thanks to City of Life for the compassion and love shown to them on this extraordinary day and their words of gratitude resonated with a depth that touched our souls, reminding us of the significance of our mission to uplift and support those in need.

We in “City of Life” remain committed to the well-being of the elderly in Sderot and surrounding areas and our calling is clear, as we seek to be a source of comfort and solace to these precious souls who have endured so much. We extend an invitation to everyone to join us in this heavenly mandate of supporting the vulnerable in Sderot and the border region of Israel and Gaza knowing that together, we can make a difference, brightening the lives of those who have weathered life’s storms, and demonstrating that love and care can truly heal and restore hearts.

You can be part of and impact the lives of more people who need help in our city and together show them the way, the truth and the life.

We invite you to be part of our ministry so that together we can bring hope to our border town of Sderot.

Our work would not be possible without the help of partners like you, so we ask you to consider in prayer the possibility of a monthly commitment that will allow us to continue with the Lord’s work here in Israel.

Sincerely yours
