As we delve deeper into the complex tapestry of Israel’s society, it becomes evident that behind the gleaming façade of progress and innovation, there lies a poignant narrative of hardship and inequality as in this land of rich history and technological marvels, the echoes of poverty resonate profoundly, reminding us that there is still much work to be done, many lives to uplift, and many hearts to touch.

When we confront the stark figures, our hearts ache for the 1.6 million individuals, among them men, women, and children, who find themselves entangled in the unforgiving grip of poverty and these are individuals who grapple with the most fundamental of human needs – shelter, education, healthcare, and sustenance. But what truly tugs at the strings of compassion is the realization that this number has surged, reaching an alarming 29.3% in 2020, and the nation has struggled to recover since then.

Behind these heart-wrenching statistics are real people, real stories, and real dreams deferred. It’s the single mothers working tirelessly to provide for their families, it’s the elderly who have given their best years to the nation and now find themselves in want, and it’s the innocent children whose futures hang precariously in the balance, robbed of opportunities and resources.

Yet, the harsh reality takes on even darker hues when we consider the relentless scourge of the COVID-19 pandemic. This invisible enemy has not only claimed lives and wrought havoc on health but has also battered the Israeli economy, with the unemployment rate soaring from a modest 3.8% to a devastating 15.4%. Families that once knew stability have been thrust into uncertainty, struggling to make ends meet. It’s estimated that around 268,000 Israelis plunged into poverty in the past year, their lives upended by the unprecedented turmoil.

In Sderot, our resilient city perched just 2 kilometers from the volatile Gaza border, the weight of poverty bears down with unrelenting force as here the poverty rate soars to a heart-rending 35%, and per capita income languishes at 40% below the national average.

In our region, daily life is shadowed by years of conflict with Palestinian militias. Rockets and incendiary balloons wreak havoc, causing destruction, injuries, and even loss of life and the relentless wail of sirens is a constant reminder of the fragility of existence, forcing residents to seek refuge in shelters when the ominous red alert pierces the air.

However, the scars of conflict run deeper than the physical wounds as economic activity stagnates, social development is stunted, and opportunities for growth are scarce. Isolated from the rest of the country, the youth are often compelled to seek their futures elsewhere, leaving behind a community grappling with post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety and according to a study by the Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon, a staggering 40% of children and adolescents living near the Gaza border grapple with some form of psychological disorder.

Israel is a land of remarkable achievements, both in economic prowess and human potential but we cannot afford to look away from the harsh realities faced by those ensnared by poverty, inequality, and conflict. The pandemic has only served to deepen the wounds of the most vulnerable, stripping away the veneer of stability and hope.

It is a stark reminder that amidst the glittering skyscrapers and bustling markets, there exists a tale of hardship and resilience, a narrative of shattered dreams and unyielding hope. As we bear witness to the struggles of our fellow citizens, let us not forget that we are bound by a shared destiny, and it is our collective responsibility to extend a helping hand, to bridge the gaps of inequality. For it is in our compassion and unity that we can create a brighter future for all who call this land home.

Empowering Sderot’s Vulnerable Families through Compassion

At “City of Life Ministry” and our Social Outreach Centre, our unwavering commitment lies in extending a helping hand to the most vulnerable families in Sderot and in the heart of a city that has endured the trials of conflict, we have become a beacon of hope, a refuge of compassion, and a lifeline for those facing economic hardship.

In our pursuit of a brighter future for Sderot, we have embarked on a mission fueled by compassion. At the heart of our efforts is the distribution of food bags at our center, a simple yet profound gesture that touches the lives of the most impoverished individuals and families. We understand that in times of need, even a meal on the table can be a ray of hope, a testament that they are not alone in their struggles.

But our commitment doesn’t stop at the doors of our center. We recognize that some among us face challenges that prevent them from visiting us in person. That’s why we’ve taken the extra step to ensure that no one is left behind. We extend our hands and our hearts, delivering food directly to the homes of those who cannot make it to our center, spreading the warmth of community and the reassurance that help is always within reach.

Beyond the nourishment provided by the food we distribute, we believe in the transformative power of compassion. By standing beside the most marginalized in our community, we offer more than sustenance; we offer dignity and strength. Together, we empower individuals and families to overcome the adversities they face, fostering a sense of resilience that extends far beyond the confines of our center.

Our work at “City of Life Ministry” and our Social Outreach Centre is a promise of hope, a testament to the enduring spirit of solidarity and empathy. In Sderot, where challenges may seem insurmountable, we stand united in our dedication to uplift those in need. With every food bag, with every home delivery, we are weaving a tapestry of compassion, one that reminds us all that even in the face of adversity, our community can shine brighter together.

You have the opportunity to join us in blessing these individuals and being part of this obedient commitment as countless families await our support, and together, we can make a difference. Your involvement can impact lives in our city, leading them toward the way, the truth, and the life.

You can be part of and impact the lives of more people who need help in our city and together show them the way, the truth and the life.

We invite you to be part of our ministry so that together we can bring hope to our border town of Sderot.

Our work would not be possible without the help of partners like you, so we ask you to consider in prayer the possibility of a monthly commitment that will allow us to continue with the Lord’s work here in Israel.

Sincerely yours
