In the aftermath of the October 7th attack in Sderot, families are facing an arduous journey towards normalcy, battling emotional and economic hurdles to rebuild their shattered lives.
The traumatic events have left deep scars on the community, particularly affecting the mental well-being of children who endured harrowing experiences and profound losses. Fear, anxiety, and psychological trauma loom large, casting a shadow over the city’s efforts to heal.
Economic challenges compound the situation, with many families grappling with the loss of livelihoods and property damage incurred during the attacks. The struggle to rebuild homes and businesses adds to the burden, as residents strive to regain stability amidst uncertainty.
Moreover, the attack has shaken the sense of security in Sderot, leaving families wary of trusting existing protective measures. Lingering concerns about vulnerability and the specter of future violence further exacerbate the challenges faced by the community.
Against this backdrop, Sderot residents are bravely sharing their stories of survival and resilience. Through solidarity and support, they are navigating the path towards recovery, determined to rebuild their lives and reclaim a sense of normalcy amidst adversity.
Newly Arrived in Sderot and Evacuated Due to the War

The Kon family, consisting of Nad, her husband Vit, and their three daughters, arrived in Israel on August and settled in Sderot. Despite the challenges of the citizenship process, they adjusted to their new life for two months before the war erupted.
In the early hours of October 7th, the Kon family, found themselves abruptly awakened by the ominous sounds of explosions and the blaring sirens echoing through the air. Nad, with her three-year-old daughter in tow, rushed to the designated bomb shelter in their Sderot apartment.
Their story mirrors the tumultuous experiences of many families in the region, as they navigated the sudden onset of conflict. However, what sets their narrative apart is the proximity of danger that lurked ominously close to their doorstep. As the day unfolded, reports of armed Hamas militants freely roaming the streets and perpetrating violence sent shockwaves through the community. The terrorists’ presence in their neighborhood became a harsh reality, a stark departure from the perceived safety within their homes.
Despite the ongoing rocket attacks and the constant threat, the Kondrat family found solace and support within their communication with the congregation members. The spiritual strength derived from their faith and the sense of unity among fellow residents helped them face the fear that loomed outside their doors.
The situation escalated, and on October 9th, the family made the difficult decision to evacuate. The initial reluctance to leave the perceived safety of their home gave way to the stark realization that the war was far from over, and their resources were dwindling. The journey to safety was fraught with fear, with sirens wailing every few hours, and the sound of gunfire reminding them of the proximity of danger.
The Kon family sought refuge in Shoresh, where the embrace of the community and the assistance provided by various City Of Life projects offered a glimmer of hope. In the midst of uncertainty, their needs for warmth, essential supplies, and schooling for the children were met, thanks to the supportive hands of their new community.
This harrowing journey highlights the vulnerability of families in times of war and the vital role our ministry support plays in overcoming such adversities.
